Provides patients with assigned one to one nursing observation or one to two nursing observation, assists patients during meal service and maintenance of a safe and clean environment under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse in charge of the team and/or unit. Sitter may have assist more than two patients at a time.
Shifts: 7a-3p, 3p-11p, 11p-7a
Location: Wyckoff Heights Medical Center, Brooklyn, NY.
 
 
Work Responsibilities:
  • Ensures patients identity is verified by checking two patient identifiers; name and date of birth with each encounter.
  • Provides general aspects of care that meet psychosocial or physical needs or both simultaneously.
  • Meets communication needs of patients.
  • Demonstrates performance reflecting the initiative and responsibility expected of a Nursing Companion.
  • Hand hygiene before and after every encounter or task to be completed with patient.
  • Maintains patient safety by ensuring bed is always locked, kept at lowest position, call bell within reach, side rails up.
  • Aware of patient signage for risk for falls, yellow bracelet, yellow socks, sign over the head of the bed.
  • Demonstrates ability to communicate to the RN any observed changes in patient status and responses. Maintains awareness of the needs of the pediatric, geriatric and general patient population.
  • Demonstrates ability to assist with feeding patients and with technique appropriate for patient’s age and physical condition.
  • Provide oral care before and after each patient meal. Assists patient with hand hygiene.
  • Performs 1:1 or 1:2 close patient observation as assigned.
  • Assists patient with ambulation as ordered by provider or charge nurse. Incorporates the 4Ps (pain, position, personal items, proactive toileting} during their time with the patient.
  • Provides explanation to patient and family prior to administering care to patient; answers questions.
  • Communicates appropriately and clearly to team leader, co-workers and physicians.
  • Provides care appropriate to condition and age of the patient, including pediatric, geriatric and general population.
  • Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
  • Responds to patient in emergency or physically distressful situations.
  • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity; ensures patient confidentiality.
  • Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
  • Meets current documentation standards and policies and completes within shift.
  • Operates and maintains equipment and instruments safely and correctly.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma, or equivalent, required.
  • BLS certification, required
  • Minimum of six months to one year of related work experience.

The salary range for this position is $18.00-$18.00/hour
